Persephone: Goddess of Spring

Persephone is a Greek goddess and queen of the underworld in ancient Greek mythology and religion: 

  • Family: Daughter of Zeus, the chief god, and Demeter, the goddess of agriculture 

  • Spouse: Wife of Hades, the god of the underworld 

  • Role: Goddess of grain and agriculture, and presided over the harvest in spring 

  • Symbols: Pomegranate, flowers, and seeds of grain 

  • Roman counterpart: Proserpina 

  • Myth: Abducted by Hades, who tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds, the food of the dead. This story explains the changing seasons. 

  • Time spent with Hades and Demeter: Persephone spends one-third of the year with Hades and two-thirds with Demeter. This story explains the barren appearance of Greek fields in the summer. 

  • Central figure: A central figure in the Eleusinian Mysteries, which promised initiates a reward in the afterlife. 

  • Symbol of: Everlasting youth, continuity, and life springing forth through the ice.
